[Watch] Royal Canoe- Exodus of the Year

No Comments 06 August 2014

by Tiana Feng

In their video for “Exodus of the Year”, Royal Canoe and Matt Rankin show you Winnipeg through their eyes. It’s not the Winnipeg you see in advertisements, but you’ll be quite charmed by the end of the video.

[Watch] Young Liars – Night Window

No Comments 09 June 2014

by Nilabjo Banerjee

Young Liars have a new video out for ‘Night Window’. The track is first single off Tidal Wave, the debut album out for release June 24 via Nettwerk Records. The  video is a stylish literal translation of the song’s lyrics, and you can credit the quirky yet beautiful imagery  to Nathan Boey (Royal Canoe, Hey Ocean). If the single is any indication (and its a strong one), Young Liars have mastered crafting indie-dance hooks that you will fall in love with only after a single listen.

[Watch] Royal Canoe- Button Fumbla

For “Button Fumbla”, Royal Canoe didn’t want to lipsync a music video. Instead, they opted to capture the energy of a live performance. They look like they’re performing in the ice kingdom in Adventure Time.

Ride the Tempo’s Top Canadian Albums of 2013

It’s one thing to call an album awesome, but what’s the point if they aren’t being listened to on a continuous basis. The following list of albums is based on plays, and their ability to hook you again emotionally or just simply must be played more than once. These are the albums I haven’t forgotten about since day 1 of their release until the very end of 2013. Continue Reading

Grey Cup Sunday (or Toronto’s first sub-zero temperatures) didn’t hinder a big draw @ The Garrison to see Winnipeg’s eclectic electro pop stars Royal Canoe. Jordan Klassen and Thomas D’Arcy were on opener duties. Continue Reading

[Album Review] Royal Canoe- Today We’re Believers

No Comments 12 September 2013

by Tiana Feng

Release Date: September 3rd, 2013
Label: Nevado Records

Today We’re Believers is the long awaited album from Winnipeg 6 piece Royal Canoe. They’re eccentric, uncharacterizable and quite weird so I sat with the record for a bit, ate it up, digested and enjoyed it. Continue Reading

Check out this weird music video for Hold On To the Metal by Royal Canoe. They’re underwater and out to prove that you don’t need a big budget to make a great music video.

[Listen/Download] Royal Canoe- Exodus of the Year

No Comments 21 March 2012

Tons of artists to see this week, hopefully one of them will be Royal Canoe, although they have the unfortunate event of being scheduled at the same time as a ton of other artists I dig. Here are their shows:
Thurs. Mar. 22, 9:00PM @ Drake Underground
Fri Mar 23 – 3:30pm @ Toronto Institute for the Enjoyment of Music/821 Queen Street West (acoustic)
Sat. Mar 24, @ 9:00PM @ Hard Luck
If anything, I think I’ll check out that acoustic set as I am interested to see how this band with such lush instrumentation can strip it down.

Royal Canoe’s music always sound quirky and Hold On to the Metal is no different. They make sound experimentation sound fun, appropriate and not overdone. They released an EP this week which is available on Bandcamp.
