Young Lions Music Club Presents: The Elwins w/ The Bicycles and the Meligrove Band 02/24/2012

No Comments 27 February 2012

This was the first time I attended a Young Lions Music Club event. It was in the Burroughes Building on Queen West and I loved the space. It’s almost a hidden away little space on top of the 6th floor and many people made it up all the flights of stairs. The first band of the night was the Bicycles.

I’ve heard them before but mostly with female vocals but Friday night there were songs I haven’t heard before with the guys doing vocals. Continue Reading

The Meligrove Band are known for their catchy hooks but this night they decided to play covers, The Ramones’ covers. It was pretty awesome. They played back to back hits and shouted the song titles as they went. Examples included Sheena is a Punk Rocker and Beat on the Brat. If you haven’t already, you should check out their latest record Shimmering Lights which presence the same sort of energy they presented on stage.

Although they pretend to be from Toronto, they are actually a Mississauga (where I currently reside) grown band. The indie pop band is known for their catchy hooks behind an atmosphere of noisy violins, organ and brass wired through various guitar pedals.Meligrove Band- Bones Attack!!!sounds well and fun but if you listen carefully to the lyrics they say “If I love you to death, will your bones attack me?”. A tad eerie no? Nonetheless the rhythmic piano and dance worthy percussion make you dance those worries away.

Oh check out their shows, they’re performing with Born Ruffians and Ruby Coast in some of them!
