There is nothing finer than spending time in the funky confines of the Solstice Cafe on a lovely Victoria summer evening. Nothing, that is, unless you add some terrific music by two of Canada’s classier acts. Continue Reading

Kashka @ Harbourfront Centre 7/13/2013
On Saturday, I spent the day listening to the finalists of the Soundclash Music Awards at the Harbourfront Centre. A diverse set of artists from the GTA are competing for a $10,000 cash prize. Winners are selected by a combination of public voting and a jury.

Forest City Lover’s, Kat Burns, took the stage first with her electro-pop project Kashka. Restricted to only 30 minutes per artist, they performed the more popular tunes from Vichada like “Beautiful Distraction.” Continue Reading

Yesterday when I went to pick up my media pass, my old NXNE friend Jessica Stuart Few was doing an impromptu performance in the lobby! We met 3 or 4 NXNEs ago. Jessica’s the only person I know who plays a Koto (a 13 string Japanese instrument) in a band. She’s also playing Friday this week at C’est What 1am.

The Jessica Stuart Few is a group from Toronto consisting of Jessica Stuart, Dan Fortin and Nico Dann. I met Jessica at the FM USA conference during NXNE week. I was unfortunately unable to make their show at NXNE because I had to do door the night of their show (the downside of volunteering for the festival). Their music has a jazz and pop sound with tiny elements of folk. Check out “White Rice, Brown Sugar” from their new album Kid Dream.
