Whitby’s Watershed Hour released their rock filled EP back in December but we’ve just stumbled on them through Bandcamp. It’s songs such as Ketchup that appeal the most to me. Just plain alternative rock with some raw sounding vocals that work much more than they should.

From Toronto, Orchards has a very confusing biography on their Bandcamp that says they disappeared in 2025. However, it’s still 2012, so I assume they still exist. At least I hope so. I only just started to fall in love with their folk tunes filled with both plucked and strummed strings and trumpets. I would be quite saddened if they disappeared just as I was discovering them. Christopher Graham’s songs sound like the songs you hear in the background of commercials. They’re all light and pleasant. The singer-songwriter has even released a cover album of Disney classic songs which is free on Bandcamp. Different Planets is an original track from Down With Up And Away released last year. Why does the glockenspiel always made sounds more adorable sounding?

I rarely post hip-hop and rap, maybe because I don’t get much from Canadian artists. Self-taught is from Vancouver and they have a 15 track thing available on Bandcamp. They almost sound like a throwback to some classic rap, the good stuff. Check out Self Taught Life which is almost like an introduction to the group.

Sometimes in order to choose what I’m going to introduce to you next, I put the mp3s from my inbox on shuffle in iTunes. Today it is Halifax’s Scott Nicks. It was first introduced to me in the samples sent by Pigeon Row Publicity. Some how I became one of the top listeners according to last.fm. He released an album called Slowly recently on Bandcamp (for name your own price). It’s chocked full of songs that have some familiarity to them. What does this remind me of? I realized that it made me think of Elliott Smith and apparently herohill agrees with me.

Okay, I have been posting way too much cute pop stuff lately so here’s something a bit more dirty sounding. Dream Friends is a group from Halifax Nova Scotia. I can’t really find much about them except on their CBC Radio 3 page they describe their music as easy to play and that you should try playing it. They also list their most commonly used chords: E, A, C#Minor, sometimes B, and C, D, & G. What weirdos. However, if you want some more stuff to “play to” they have a bunch of free stuff on their Bandcamp
