Good, old-fashioned, straight-ahead, smoky Southern blues/rock.

Bride & Groom is an indie folk duo from Montreal made of guitar-wielding singer/songwriter Jesse Daniel and cellist Kaitlyn Raitz. The result is quite harmonious as proven by their recent self-titled EP.

An excellent double-shot of electronica from the brilliant Waxlimbs: first, a disturbing bit of noise pop featuring Mash, and then a lovely Portishead-like number featuring Isabella Davis.

Good god, y’all! Just take a listen to the Deep Sea Gypsies’ blend of rock, blues, psychedelia, with some hip-hop thrown in for good measure. Keeps the spirit of the late ’60’s alive, but it’s fresh and contemporary at the same time.

We were slow on the uptake on this one, but it is too good to pass up. “The She-Snake Shuffle” is classic rock with a swampy blues edge, but that description hardly does it justice. It’s a sly number that gets under your skin, and just when you are feeling comfortable the boys of Sunhawk throw you some curves just to make things interesting.

Hawk and Steel

‘Year After Year’ is Side B of the Snoqualmie / Hawk and Steel Split 7 Inch record (out 08/08/2014). A lovely, soft slice of alt-country folk rock.

LABS, a new electro/pop music project by Lindsay Bryan and Adam Sutherland, have released their first single ‘Down’. The Victoria duo strike a nice balance between the warmth of the human voice and the harsh coldness of electronic sound.

[Listen] lavallee – above the treeline

No Comments 06 July 2014

by Mark Anthony Brennan

This 5 song EP is the debut effort from Victoria’s Zoey Ockenden (a.k.a. lavallee), which comes with minimal musical accompaniment, placing the singing and lyrics front and centre. This is a brave move given the wealth of strong female singer-songwriters that are out there today, but if Ockenden is at all daunted by the task then she does a good job of hiding it. So comfortable is she in her own musical skin that ‘above the treeline’ comes across sounding like the work of a veteran.

Sleepy Driver aka Fredericton singer-songwriter Pete Hicks dropped an album in June titled Ignatius. If you’re into a mix of alt-country and blues, Sleepy Driver is worth checking out. The band will be playing the Canada’s Day show in their home town alongside Rich Aucoin.

Apparently not having vowels is a thing now not just in the band name, but the titles of songs as well. TMPL is a new electronic project consisting of producers Kevin O’Brien and Eli Andreas and their expansive track “VOYIJ” which I assume is said “voyage” is fantastic.

[Listen] ginla – Almost Plastic

ginla is Toronto-based duo of producers Joe Manzoli and Jon Nellen. ‘Almost Plastic’ is the premier release off an upcoming EP set for a spring release. The track starts off with a splash of beach waves, and sets up an ambient vibe backed by hazy distorted vocals and groovy electronic beats,  finishing off with some major reverb action and recognizable MGMT-esque keys riff. There is an anonymity around the duo, as there are no pictures available, except a visual loop accompanying the track on the website. With a debut as strong as ‘Almost Plastic’, ginla won’t be a mystery for too long.

[Listen] Redanda – Reverse Tranny Club EP

Are you craving some rock n’ roll? Redanda‘s Reverse Tranny Club might help a tad with that. The band from down the QEW (aka Hamilton) deliver some gritty rock in this 5 song EP, that pairs vintage guitar play with Alex Turner-esque vocals. The output? Kind of music that might make you mosh one second and then sway with a drink in your hand the next. The band is bound to cause some ruckus during NXNEYou can STREAM the EP below.

Now that I’m done with CMW posts, it’s back to regular posting of new music. Here’s what I’ve been grooving to, a band called Vogue Dots from New Brunswick. If you’re into the dark electronic styles of Data Romance, you should definitely check them out. Their debut EP Toska is out now on Indica Records. Check out “Skinny Thing” below.
