[Listen/Download] Dream Jefferson- Hannah

No Comments 12 July 2012

by Tiana Feng

Party rappers Dream Jefferson are back with an EP titled Manchester Blue which is a completely free download on their Bandcamp. This one is less “party” rap sounding than their previous Punch Perm. It’s driven by synths and electro beats. Parts of it even have an indie-rock sensibility to it. This is especially apparent in Hannah. I love their continuous exploration of sound and this might be my favourite collection of their songs yet.

Unbuttoned w/ Fresh Kils & Relic @ Supermarket 05/31/2012

I first heard about Unbuttoned a few weeks ago, but I fell in love with their EP on Bandcamp. Of course I jumped on the chance to see them live!
Fresh Kils & Relic @ Supermarket 05/31/2012
Opening up for them was rapper Relic and Fresh Kils on beats. I don’t listen to a lot of rap, but I thought they sure riled up the crowd. The one thing was that Fresh Kils wasn’t hooked up to a Macbook. He was making beats live.

There was only one opener, so Unbuttoned was on soon after.
Unbuttoned @ Supermarket 05/31/2012
I was pretty overwhelmed by the amount of people that were actually at the show. I had only heard of them, but the place was PACKED with dedicated fans. They did a great job of promoting themselves, and fans are still commenting on the event about how great the show was. For a group just starting out, it was one of the better performances I’ve seen so far. There was a ton of energy and people on stage and everybody was having a really great time. Their encore included a cover of Gotye’s Somebody That I Used to Know which I uploaded below.

[Listen/Download] Pip Skid- Turn it Up (Feat. Skratch Bastid)

If your Monday still isn’t exciting enough let’s Turn it Up. This is a beat heavy one from Pip Skid’s latest People Are the Worst. I like to pretend I have lots of bling while waving my hands to the beats of this song.

[Listen/Download] Animal Mother- Paranoia In Stereo

No Comments 12 April 2012

Animal Mother is Kitchener, Ontario’s Harrison Platz. His style of rap is not your usual overly fast-talking type. It’s almost laid back as you hear in the following track Paranoia In Stereo. It’s slightly bizarre and weird.

My favourite Acadian rap group (not sure if there are others) Radio Radio is back with a video for Galope. They look mighty fine as cowboys, although I’m not sure that’s what I would consider them here.

Check out this track by the new project of Vancouver’s Sweatshop Union under the monicker Leisure Gang. This is a pretty great intro anthem. There’s a self-titled EP that should be out very soon. Leisure Gang demonstrates their progressive sound and will move onto a more loose party feel.

[Listen/Download] Radio Radio- Sunrise/All Inclusive World Tour

Here’s my favourite Acadian French rap group Radio Radio. Looks like they are becoming even more beat heavy. Of course they haven’t lost the ridiculously hilarious lyrics that make me glad to be bilingual. But don’t worry even if you don’t understand French, they have random spurts of English. This track also features French artist Poncho. They will be releasing their followup to Polaris Prize nominated Belmundo Regal on April 17, 2012. It will be titled Havre De Grâce. I’m oh so excited.

I rarely post hip-hop and rap, maybe because I don’t get much from Canadian artists. Self-taught is from Vancouver and they have a 15 track thing available on Bandcamp. They almost sound like a throwback to some classic rap, the good stuff. Check out Self Taught Life which is almost like an introduction to the group.

No Comments 12 February 2012

Usually I hate the word “swag” but for some reason in this hip-hop track by Vancouver’s Panther & the Supafly, I don’t seem to mind. The thumping bass laced with 70′s funk influences are kind of difficult to ignore. Check out Swaggapuff from their album Nkazi.

[Listen/Download] Gescha- My Streets Dream

Rapping over smooth jazz samples is by no means a revolutionary form of songcraft, but when you’re doing something cliched, you’d best do it extremely well. “My Street Dream” by Gescha is an archetypal example of how it should be done. Produced by indie hip-hip mastermind Muneshine, the track has a distinctly Canadian feel as far as hip-hop production is concerned. You can grab his album Crayon Politics on Bandcamp for name your price.

Tiny Danza was the winner of this year’s Toronto Indie Week competition. I hadn’t heard of them until I found out they were performing at this weekend’s Steam Whistle Unsigned event. If after this post you fall in love with them you can enter our contest here for this Friday, November 25th’s show! Anyways, upon researching I found out their album You Could Have It All… is a free download digitally on Bandcamp. I don’t listen to a lot of rap, but DAMN.. I fell in love with this and can’t stop head bopping to their tasty rhythmic lyrics with soulfully sung verses. This is totally something groovy. I’m pretty excited to see how they translate this into a live set. I hope all the instruments I hear will be live!

[Watch] Mister Park & Kat Revolution- Mic Check 1, 2

Having went to school for both music and entertainment management I know some pretty rad and talented people. Today I will introduce you to MC & Producer combo, Mister Park & Kat Revolution. They will be releasing an album called Hotel Animalia around Christmas.

Here’s their statement on the album:
“An estranged yet comfortable place of party with a quirky presence of nature, Hotel Animalia is Mister Park & Kat Revolution’s debut electronic audio-experience. As accommodating as it is unconventional, dare venture into this world of backwards art as told through the Hotel’s very own elevator operators Molly and Dolly. They will take you up floor-by-floor to host your journey through door opening infectious four-to-the-floor dance parties. A palace for party animals, full of parties… and animals guests are encouraged to rid themselves of all inhibitions. Do you ever feel the need to just get away? Everyones invited, come play.

Check out their first music video Mic Check 1, 2 below. Don’t you wish you could join the party?

[Review] Vibonics- Vibonics EP

No Comments 14 September 2011

From Toronto, Ontario, Vibonics is a group of music makers that can be described as a fusion of indie rock, soul and hip hop. Their music laced with jazz and funk inspired riffs and chord progressions which makes whatever they put out a pretty fun listen. If you’re from Toronto you might have even heard them in passing as they play around. Just recently they released their debut self-titled EP. Continue Reading

Almost forgot to post this! But here is Dream Jefferson‘s return with their sophomore EP titled Punch Perm which you can grab again for free off Bandcamp. The dance/party-rap group this time around added just the tiniest bit of pop to their tunes making these anthems even catchier than they used to be. Check out my favourite track from the set below called All Things Shining. It’s the perfect example of indie-pop meets dance party rap!

Vancouver’s hip-hop collective have existed since the early 2000s who’s rap always had a political underlining. Well they are still up and running with their latest Bill Murray EP. Take a listen to this rather head boppin’ track. You won’t find them rhyming anything about big booties here.

My best friend @ellefeeney is like the biggest Science nerd and Darwin lover ever. Somehow, she came across The Rap Guide to Evolution. Sounds hilarious? Coincidentally enough Baba Brinkman is also from Vancouver, a Canadian! The tracks are a little bit long but if you’re a science nerd, you might dig this. It’s a name your price model album which you can grab at Bandcamp. Check out Artificial Selection, I dig the song-chorus thing.

Here’s a new track from London, Ontario’s rap trio Toolshed off their fifth album The Lost. I think you should atleast go listen to the album in it’s entirity on their Bandcamp though. It’s a perfect May 24 party-rap album with so much fun, with the guts to make fun of today’s pop culture in a sort of refreshing way.

[Listen/Download] Dream Jefferson- Westminster Abbey

Dream Jefferson are back with a single that is appropriately released (just look at the title) just in time for the royal wedding. It has nothing to do with the Royal Wedding, but a track with a pretty addictively catchy chorus. Westminster Abbey is also the first single off their upcoming EP titled Punch Perm which be released in the next couple of months. Haven’t posted a rap track in a little while, but this is something to check out.
