When it comes to things described as “drone”, I usually preface with a *yawn* and am reluctant to listen. I reacted the same way to Tim Hecker and his music is not found anywhere else on the blog. It was after a fair bit of prodding from other music lovers that I finally gave him a chance. Virgins is my first exposure to Hecker and despite the “best new music labels” he’s been receiving, I haven’t read too much into the album. This is a review based on listens only, so I might not get all the supposed allusions it’s supposed to be based on. Continue Reading

AroarA is the husband and wife duo of Ariel Engle and Andrew Whiteman of Broken Social Scene. This new musical project set out to translate Alice Notley’s 2007 poem book In the Pines into songs. Notley underwent Hepetatis C treatment and during that time experienced depression-era flashbacks. Her poems contained quotations from gospel, folk and blues music, styles that can all be heard in AroarA’s debut. Continue Reading

Release Date: August 20th, 2013
Label: Flemish Eye

It has been 2 years since experimental pop-art band Braids released their Polaris nominated Native Speaker. Since then, their keyboardist Kathy Lee and singer Raphaelle Standell-Preston had a falling out. The band was going in a more electronic direction and Lee sought out more vocal lines in order to expand her involvement with the band. However, Standell-Preston knew her vocals were an integral part of Braids and would not succumb to these changes and Lee left the band. It was probably for the better. Flourish // Perish dropped the guitars and real drums for electronics. The album is assembled completely in Ableton, with pre-recorded instrument samples. Continue Reading

Toronto 4-piece Decades released a self-titled debut with production credits including Alex Bonefant (Crystal Castles, Metz), mixer Craig Silvey (Arcade Fire, Arctic Monkeys) and Clint Gibbs (Rihanna, Ke$ha).
