[LISTEN] ANCHORESS – TORRENTIAL

No Comments 21 September 2014

Anchoress puts out some hard-driving post-punk. “Torrential” is no exception, although it starts off with some twangy bass and a spoken word passage, followed by an instrumental interlude, before it finally just kicks you in the nuts and has done with it.

[Album Review] USA Out of Vietnam- Crashing Diseases and Incurable Airplanes

usaoutofvietnam

Release Date: May 5th, 2014
Label: New Damage Records / Aurora Borealis

‘Crashing Diseases and Incurable Airplanes’ is an impressive effort, to say the least. Recorded at Montreal’s renowned Hotel2Tango with a gaggle of guest musicians, the album is a richly layered cornucopia of musical sounds. It’s progressive drone metal, but that’s a label that is more limiting than illuminating.

And…….the twelfth band is:

SINGLE MOTHERS (London, Ont)
single-mothers

There is something to be said for in-your-face, unbridled, feral punk. That’s what Single Mothers dish up in style. A while back there they put out a couple of EP’s and then seemed set to disappear. But, no, here they are with their debut full-length record about to come out. That’s good news for all of us. Bring it on.

Now, the third band you cannot afford to miss:

P.S. I LOVE YOU (Kingston)
ps I love you

P. S. I Love You has just released its third album of boisterous but nuanced noise pop. According to All Music Guide the duo of Paul Saulnier and Benjamin Nelson “conjure up a captivating web of sound, pairing thunderous percussion and gossamer-like acoustic guitars with gargantuan, heavily distorted electrics”. Their performance should be loud, sinister, engaging and exciting when they take the late night slot on Saturday night.

[LISTEN] PYPY – PAGAN DAY

pypy

PyPy is a “supergroup” formed by members of CPC Gangbangs, Red Mass and Duchess Says. Their 7-track album ‘Pagan Day’ is a non-stop blistering psych-punk freakout. The pace ranges from driving hardcore through dance punk to slowcore grind, but at all times it is both sinister and enticing. A great record.

Vancouver’s Anchoress go all hardcore “For a Soft Heart”. It’s not simple punk, though — there’s an interesting song structure and some metal chugging.

Release Date: June 3rd, 2014
Label: Arts & Crafts/Matador Records

Back in December, I had the pleasure of hanging out with Damian Abraham, Jonah Falco and Sandy Miranda at Candle Recording Studio for a Stereogum feature story. Abraham had discussed with us his internal conflicts, what it’s like to be a dad and also a member of a band with a certain level of fame yet still being accepted in the punk scene. These are all internal conflicts that fuel the energy found in the band’s latest effort Glass Boys. Continue Reading

Release Date: June 17th, 2014
Label: Buzz Records/Carpark Records

There are artists out there who give a lot of thought to their intended audience. They use terms like “relatable”, and strive to have their music “resonate” with the listener. Then there’s the likes of Greys. Frankly, they are too happy just playing what the hell they want to give a sh%# what you think. It’s the quintessential punk attitude, and Greys have it in spades. Rating:

Release Date: June 17th, 2014
Label: Domino Records

Warning: take a deep breath before pressing the start button on ‘Deep Fantasy’ because once you do it’s a headlong rush, with no time for anything as mundane as inhaling. White Lung lets loose an unrelenting torrent of scorching metal-tinged hardcore. They take no prisoners. It is punk perfection. Continue Reading

Drop everything for 18 minutes and listen to this pounding new track from Fucked Up. “Year of the Dragon” is the latest addition to their zodiac single series and the best one in my opinion and I’m not just saying that because I’m a dragon.
