Sudbury is becoming the go-to-scene if you are looking for nostalgic rock. First, it was The Almighty Rhombus! You can add Lightmares to that list as well. For the fans of Violent Femmes, Stooges or The Replacements, the trio’s in your face energy and rock with recklessness will make you wanna do radical things like bob your head violently!

Stream ‘Soup’, off the upcoming release Lightmares are Rich and Educated. While you are at it, check out their Violent Femme’s cover of ‘Add it Up’. Me oh my! I wanna cause a ruckus now!

[Listen] The Lying Cheats- Lovin On Me

A while back I posted about Blackpaw Society. Well The Lying Cheats is a newer band coming out with one of the members. Just like their name, their music is dirty and full on trashy 60s inspired garage-rock. Stream Lovin On Me below. It’s definitely got that “naughty” vibe.

[Listen] Church- Either Or

No Comments 08 January 2013

Last March we introduced you to Church, but the band now has a full album out on Bandcamp. Unlike the earlier EP, the album consists of new material constructed by all four members. In 8 songs, some pack a bunch, others explore atmospheric folk territory tied together by their fuzzy vocal style.

The Dirty Nil have released a split with Northern Primitive. For the split The Dirty Nil have contributed the track Zombie Eyed which I was told to listen to “at a motherfucking loud volume.” Both songs are free/name your own price for a month only! Or you can shell out a measily $7 for some physical 7″ vinyl.

[Listen/Download] The Dirty Nil- Little Metal Baby Fist

No Comments 25 September 2012

The Dirty Nil are releasing a 7″ on October 24th. It’ll only be $5 for the vinyl but if you don’t want to wait until then to hear it the A side Little Metal Baby Fist and it’s accompanying B side Hate is A Stone is available on Bandcamp for whatever. The A side is noisey fuzzed out track that’s totally meant to be listened loudly. The B-side is slower and a bit more mellow. That doesn’t mean it’s not good. Plus it builds up to a decent climax til the end.

[Watch] PS I Love You- Toronto

No Comments 17 July 2012

PS I Love You have released a new video for their song Toronto. There’s are old school inspired bits that take you back to the days of the ghetto old video camera recording quality. I love the cheesy fades, one of which kind of looks like the cover of Beach House’s In Bloomd. The song of course does feature some scenes of Toronto the pass by quickly. What can you spot?

The Folk recently released a 3 song EP called Say It Again. There’s a lot of energy in the three songs and it captures the essence of that grungey garage type feel. Here is When I Go Away, my favourite of the 3 tracks.

[Listen/Download] Scab Smoker- Butcher of Daemons

I think we can all agree that that picture is awesome. Scab Smoker and this song are pretty awesome too. Vocally, it’s equal parts Iron Age and The Sweet with a Phil Collins-esque level of reverb. I never thought that’s a sentence I’d ever write. I’m still not 100% sure what it means.

An extremely long and subdued (relative to the rest of the song, at least) middle section breaks up a pseudo-thrash intro and outro and works even though it shouldn’t. Definitely one of the more interesting songs I’ve heard in the last few months.

[Listen/Download] Weed- Ben’s Tour

From Vancouver, Weed is a fuzzy grunge rock band. You’ll find a lot of noise in their Gun Control EP, free on Bandcamp. Here is their single Ben’s Tour. Somehow even though the vocals are so hidden in the noise, the song still manages to be pretty contagious.

[Listen/Download] Church- Parasite

No Comments 12 March 2012

Church is pretty hard to google because of it’s generic name but they are a grunge-pop band from Toronto. They have a free EP up on Bandcamp that highlights a lot of good sounding things to come as they are working on a full album. With a mixture of basement lo-fi and some generic indie-rock they have songs that are sure to please.

Here’s a weird find on Bandcamp. It’s pretty dirty grungey psychedelic rock. What’s strange is that despite the overall strange darkness, it seems to still make a ton of sense.

[Listen/Download] Dream Friends- Allan’s Birthday

No Comments 18 February 2012

by Tiana Feng

Okay, I have been posting way too much cute pop stuff lately so here’s something a bit more dirty sounding. Dream Friends is a group from Halifax Nova Scotia. I can’t really find much about them except on their CBC Radio 3 page they describe their music as easy to play and that you should try playing it. They also list their most commonly used chords: E, A, C#Minor, sometimes B, and C, D, & G. What weirdos. However, if you want some more stuff to “play to” they have a bunch of free stuff on their Bandcamp

Plan B have just finished 2 shows in the LA and NY, impressing the likes of Paloma Faith and Elton John hoping to break ground as they already have done since 2005 here in the U.K. Plan B’s music is best described as rap mixed with other genres such as Pop/Rock/Hip-Hop/Soul and Dubstep.
