New video to “For Those Who Stay”. This song is already a favourite at Ride the Tempo, but it’s greatly enhanced by the great imagery here.

dilly

Lead singer Katie Monks’ erratic, glitter-rock vocal stylings highlight this great grunge/pop number from Toronto’s Dilly Dally.

COUNTDOWN TO RIFFLANDIA! SIXTEEN “MUST SEE” ACTS: FOURTEENTH INSTALLMENT (Victoria, BC Sept. 11th – 14th)

Getting close to the end (and Rifflandia starts tomorrow). Fourteenth is:

SMASH BOOM POW (Vancouver)
smash boom pow

Smash Boom Pow is a relatively new act on the Vancouver scene. They refer themselves as a loud three-piece rock band. That’s quite true, but it glosses over the fact that front man Ulysses has a great voice and sings very tuneful melodies. Noise pop, alternative power pop, melodic loud rock — call it what you will, but just don’t miss their high octane show.

Some post-whatever from Waterloo’s Life in Vacuum. “Passenger Mr. Funstash” is from their album ‘5’ (which I’m guessing is their fifth album).

raspberry

From what I can tell “Nascent Meadows” (love that title) is the first full-length from London’s The Raspberry Heaven (love that name). You can call it sadcore, emo, dream pop, shoegaze, post-hardcore. Or you can just call it good.

Now, the third band you cannot afford to miss:

P.S. I LOVE YOU (Kingston)
ps I love you

P. S. I Love You has just released its third album of boisterous but nuanced noise pop. According to All Music Guide the duo of Paul Saulnier and Benjamin Nelson “conjure up a captivating web of sound, pairing thunderous percussion and gossamer-like acoustic guitars with gargantuan, heavily distorted electrics”. Their performance should be loud, sinister, engaging and exciting when they take the late night slot on Saturday night.

Victoria’s celebration of indie music kicks off in 8 days. To get you stoked I am going to post a “must see” act once every 12 hours until the festival starts. So that’s (hang on, I’m doing the math…) 16, yes, 16 acts at Rifflandia that you simply should not miss.

Sooo, to get things started: JPNSGRLS (Vancouver)

fi_jpnsgrls21

JPNSGRLS (pronounced ‘Japanese Girls’) is a relatively new band on the Vancouver scene, with their full-length debut ‘Circulation” dropping just earlier this year. Their brand of power grunge/punk is as intriguing as it is invigorating. Get ready to be blown away when they hit the stage (Victoria Event Centre) at 11:30 pm on Friday, Sept. 12th.

[Album Review] Gob- Apt. 13

gob

Rating:

Release Date: August 26th, 2014
Label: New Damage Records

Gob started their career over 20 years ago, so some of you may be simply too young to know who they are. Even if you were listening to music back in the ’90’s you could be forgiven for not recalling them; after all they’ve only put out one album in the past 10 years, and that one was way back in 2007. To make matters worse, they’ve been promising us a new album since 2009, so many of us just stopped paying attention. But anyway, here we are, it’s 2014 and we have a new Gob album on our hands. Was it worth the wait? Yes, probably. They may not be blazing any new trails into the 21st century, but at least they are doing us the great favour of not rehashing their own musical past.

[LISTEN] PINNER – SAD LAMP

pinner

Pinner could pretty well act as poster-boys for West Coast slacker noise pop. They are such slackers, in fact, that they can’t even be bothered to reset their clocks — for them it will always be 1995. Party on, Wayne. Fountains of Wayne, that is.

dead soft

The Vancouver grunge trio known as Dead Soft have a penchant for blistering fuzzed-out guitars and their vocal delivery often veers into screaming mode. However, that is not to say that their self-titled full-length debut is a simple balls-to-the-wall rock out. There are some catchy melodies, clever song structures and an overall artistry at play. This 9-track album drops August 30th.

[Album Review] JPNSGRLS- Circulation

Rating:

Release Date: July 15th, 2014
Label: Light Organ Records

JPNSGRLS (pronounced ‘Japanese Girls’) put together a batch of high energy punk-pop on their full-length debut, ‘Circulation‘, and there’s a lot to like here. There’s trashy punk outbursts and heavy metal power chords. There are grungy lows and power pop highs. The vocalists, who spins some quirky lyrics, has a singing style that falls somewhere between British ’70’s glitter and American ’90’s indifference, and he throws in some screams and falsetto for good measure. So the ingredients are all there, but the question is whether they can successfully pull all of the elements together. Continue Reading

The Dirty Nil have released their latest single “Cinnamon” ahead of their fourth seven-inch, which is out August 19th on Fat Wreck Chords. Like things loud, raucous and in-your-face? The Dirty Nil is your band. “Cinnamon” is a noisy bit of garage punk delivered with 90’s grunge attitude.

[Album Review] Cousins- The Halls of Wickwire

cousins

Rating:

Release Date: May 13th, 2014
Label: Hand Drawn Dracula

It has the energy of punk, the distortion of noise pop and the angst of grunge. Such is the sound of Cousins, reputedly Halifax’s hardest-working band. And yet a listen to their latest release The Halls of Wickwire reveals more complexity than punk, more muscle than noise pop, and it offers more hope than grunge ever could.  The fact is Cousins carve out their own niche, creating their unique way of communicating through the medium of modern music. They are painfully aware that this ugly world can drag you down, but their music makes you jump up and yell back in defiance. Continue Reading
