No Comments 16 December 2014

by Mica McCurdy

Tim Baker of indie rock band Hey Rosetta! recently teamed up with Toronto’s own Choir! Choir! Choir! for a special rendition of the band’s classic “Carry Me Home”. Just in time for the holidays, this version showcases Baker’s soaring vocals while the talented choir brings home the nostalgic and longing lyrics with their lush accompaniment.

Catch Hey Rosetta! on tour with Stars in the new year. See full tour dates here.

[Listen] Mimico – Fate Screen/Fresh Snow – Mony, Mony (7″ split)

Here’s a cool 7″ split for you. One side you’ve got a Mimico’s “Fate Screen” a total ’80’s throwback with a motorik beat, steely synths and a goth-like vocal delivery. Other side is an instrumental version of “Mony, Mony” by Fresh Snow. When you’ve a rhythm this groovy who needs words? (actually, it’s “Mony, Mony”, so who needs words anyway?)

Man, this has been a busy week in music — I’ve got a lot of catching up to do. Anyway… Rosie June has so far been one of Vancouver Island’s best-kept secrets, but we figure that isn’t going to last much longer. Here she gives Sugar Ray’s “When It’s Over” a torchy, haunting makeover.

Peter Gardner, lead singer of Hawk and Steel, had an idea: team up with folk singer Sydney Batters, rent a warehouse and then, with little rehearsal, just record their favourite folk-rock songs. Simple. Earnest. Brilliant. The pair lovingly render versions of classics by Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash, Townes Van Zandt, Steve Earle and Guy Clark. The rustling of fabric, the odd missed note, a false start and some traffic noise merely add to the honesty of the effort.

cold specks

We’re big fans of Cold Specks, so it’s always a thrill when she drops a new single. “We Know Who U R” is a cover of Nick Cave’s song from last year, which Spx sings in her own unique way.

[Album Review] Grey Lands- Songs By Other People

No Comments 01 September 2014

by Mark Anthony Brennan

Release Date: August 12th, 2014
Label: Paper Bag Records

I enjoy an interesting cover song as much as the next person, but I have rarely been inclined to review an entire record of them. Once in while, however, a covers album comes along that is more than just a tribute – it makes an artistic statement of its own. Such is the case with the aptly titled ‘Songs By Other People’ by Grey Lands, a side project of Cuff the Duke leader singer Wayne Petti.

I have no idea what induced Petti to pick these particular songs but it was an inspired move. With the exception of “The Sun Ain’t Gonna Shine Anymore” (OK, and maybe “Girl from the North Country”) these tunes are pretty obscure, but damn they are all excellent. I’d be just as happy with a collection of the originals. Then again, that would just be someone’s personal mixtape and, yeah, what’s the point in that? Continue Reading

grey lands

Hey, here’s another album title that explains everything: ‘Songs By Other People’ by Grey Lands (a.k.a. Wayne Petti) is, you guessed it, an album of covers. This one is the quirky “Outta My Head” by M. Ward. It features Hayden and also some excellent guitar. Lovely stuff.

So I get really excited about the Polaris Music Prize every year, but this year they’ve upped the ante with the Polaris Cover Sessions. There will be three releases from albums that have made the short-list in the past: Sarah Harmer will cover Caribou’s “Odessa” Whitehorse will cover The New Pornographers’ “Bones Of An Idol” and Great Lake Swimmers will cover Sarah Harmer’s “I’m A Mountain”.

The first release is here and it’s gorgeous. Only 31 more days until the Polaris gala!
