For Record Store Day this Saturday, The Darcys are releasing a limited edition (500 LPS) of a project inspired by Cormac McCarthy’s Cities of the Plain. If you are expecting regular Darcys you are mistaken. This is beautifully haunting, emotionally sad piece of work. At times it rumbles with energy, other times it’s frightening and it’s definitely a wonderful 20 minute journey.

Here’s a random Bandcamp find from Montreal. Other than that I don’t know much about them but I do dig these beats. They don’t have much on their website besides this song and a promise of an album (that was supposed to be released in March).

Now that the weather is warming up, it’s time for summer jams. For me, that’s bright alt-pop with a certain lo-fi carefree nature. I think I found that in Vancouver’s Nice Try. They just released an EP recently titled Convinced which you can stream below.

Jef Barbara and Karneef member Pascale Mercier makes her own music under the monicker Mathematique. She recently dropped an EP on Stellar Kinematics called “Feel”. The songs have an underwater vibe, like Young Galaxy, but is very different at the same time. Feel is a very fitting title for the collection of songs as you definitely will be entranced by everything from the building arrangements, Mercier’s voice and excellent remixes.

Swim Good teamed up with dreamy vocalist Daniela Andrade as well as Bon Iver’s drummer S. Carey for their latest tune “Grand Beach”. I love this tune because it has essentially two parts, an easy going part with strummed guitar, and a dreamier part like the hazy memories of summer.

Ever caught yourself humming a song after just one listen? And yes, I know you felt bad because you were singing the chorus for “Timber”. Well, set your guilt aside, and check out “Better Alone”, courtesy of Edmonton’s Diamond Mind. The chamber-pop quartet have the Beatles-esque holistic pop soaking in rich harmonies a la Beach Boys. Their songs could be the background score to a glorious sunny day playing a friendly game of beach volleyball. .. yeah summer can’t get here soon enough!

avatars-000076295005-n3enr8-t500x500Ever caught yourself wondering, “what do people do in Kingston?” Other than getting nerdy at Queen’s University during the day and getting drunk somewhere on Princess St in the evenings,  Kingston-ites are also responsible for producing some fine music! You have the notable names like The Tragically Hip, Bedouin Soundclash and several others. Well, say hello to Sweet JetsThe Kingston trio’s garage-pop sounds will make you wanna get your dancing shoes on and get slightly crazy! Self-described as the ‘melt of The Misfits and Scott Pilgrim’, the band is releasing Breath of Heat, their sophomore album, on May 9. For now, you can get a sample of their catchy hooks via “Of a Feather” streaming below. Check out their Bandcamp for older material.

Vancouver’s Real Ponchos are bringing their flavour of Canadiana all across this great country of ours this May and June. The four-piece are independently releasing their full length debut Since I Let You Go on May 6th, and bringing the party to Toronto on May 16. To get a preview of their folk, country and roots concoction, you can stream the track “Outta This Place”. The song has enough twang to please the country folks and grooving melodies to keep the others humming.
