Tagaq’s “Retribution” is both exhilarating and terrifying. The music starts out strange but not overly dark, and Tagaq speaks calmly, albeit with a certain gravitas. Gradually the music becomes more tumultuous and threatening, while Tagaq switches to her idiosyncratic vocal style.
The video is equally dramatic, with Tagaq being joined by Greenlandic mask dancer Laakkuluk Williamson Bathory in a wild performance.
“The ‘Retribution’ video embodies the idea of nature being forced into unnatural spaces,” Tagaq tells Thump. “It’s about how one cannot remove the essence of life and instinct out of our bodies, no matter how debilitated this society becomes. Laakkuluk is a Greenlandic mask dancer that articulates the emotional elements of humanity. Fear. Anger. Laughter. Lust. Our ode to nature is our ode to life.”
