Lisa Leblanc’s latest record is the life of a dramatic person who sings exactly what she’s thinking, and does it masterfully.
“Could You Wait Til I’ve Had My Coffee?” is a brilliant tune telling someone to wait until you’ve had your cup of joe before having another fight or breakup. She stings back with all the reasons the dude sucks too. The chorus makes a very good chorus to blast when someone comes bugs you in the morning at work.
The humorous “Dump that Guy ASAP” is a song to that best friend who’s dating a complete asshole and just you can’t wait to celebrate when they break-up.
Her genius songwriting continues throughout. The title comes from a line in the commitment-fearing “I Love You, I Don’t Love You, I Don’t Know.” One of my favourite moments of the album is the stripped down solo ballad “5784 km”. The way she writes/sings shows how awesome her songwriting craft truly is.
The arrangements are just as good as the lyrics of the songs. Just listen to the twang of the fast-moving “City Slickers and Country Boys”. There’s also a killer folk-trash cover of Motorhead’s “Ace of Spades”. The fun banjo filled “Eh Cher” kicks that guy out of your place so you can have some alone time.
On Why You Wanna Leave, Runaway Queen, Leblanc writes the songs that we wish we did.
