Tegan and Sara w/ JR JR @ Hilton Toronto 6/25/2016

Last night, I was invited to an exclusive Tegan and Sara concert at Hilton Toronto. The event was part of the Hilton Concert Series that happens worldwide, open to Hilton Honors members.

The night started with a cocktail hour that spoiled us with food and drink. There were other fun things like a photobooth with fun costumes.

At 8pm the doors opened to the performance room. The space was intimate yet held a stage with proper lights, screens and cameras for the show.

Detroit Michigan’s JR JR (formerly known as Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr) kicked off the night with their danceable indie pop. Their set included “If You Didn’t See Me (Then You Weren’t On the Dancefloor)” and “Electrical Energy”. There was also a cover of The Beach Boys’ “God Only Knows” and Gil Scott-Heron’s “We Almost Lost Detroit”.

Tegan and Sara‘s set was super intimate. They told stories to the crowd and even took an audience member’s phone and Facetimed their phone on stage. They were personable and endearing. We were treated their greatest hits including “Boyfriend”, “U-Turn” and “Stop Desire” from their latest record Love You to Death. Longtime fans also heard a guitar-less version of “Nineteen” (from the 2007 album The Con) that sounded awesome. Their new band only consists of a keyboardist and a drummer, which is appropriate for the electropop sound of their latest work. The night ended with Heartthrob‘s lead single “Closer”.

It was a real treat to see such a huge pop band in a room so intimate. If you have the opportunity to check out the concert series in your city I highly recommend it. It’s a night of awesome food and great music!
