Charlotte Cardin, Ria Mae @ The Garrison 5/5/2016 #CMW2016 Tiana Feng May 10, 2016 Alternative, Canadian, Concerts, Music, Pop, R&B 1958 Some of my Thursday night was spent at the Spotify showcase at The Garrison, catching two artist’s whose music I had discovered through streaming services: Ria Mae and Charlotte Cardin. Halifax’s Ria Mae, who readers may know from the single “Gold” played pop with edge and presented a humorous stage presence as she reinforced that everyone should move closer to the stage. Though we’ve seen her in the past with a full band, she brought with her only a drummer this time letting Mae really shine through as the star of the show. If someone were to ask me to name one act that blew me away last week, that would be Montreal’s Charlotte Cardin. She has very little released music so far including my favourite single of 2016 “Like it Doesn’t Hurt” and the french track “Les Eschardes“. Her sultry voice delivered an 100% English set for the evening that blew the entire audience away. She has the perfect package of goosebump inducing voice, and provoking lyrics, which somehow beautifully employ the occasional swear. She sings the love songs of the broken hearted in a way that shows you she is fuckin’ angry too. I’m eagerly anticipating new music (hopefully an album) will come out soon.
