Braids w/ NONI WO @ The Horseshoe 5/14/2015 Tiana Feng May 16, 2015 Alternative, Art rock, Canadian, Concerts, Experimental, Music, Pop 1440 Braids just dropped their latest album Deep in the Iris and the band made the record’s Toronto debut at the Horseshoe on Thursday. Opening was Montreal experimental pop band NONI WO. Their live interpretation of the record U S B E P, resembled a jam session. Every time I see Raphaelle Standell-Preston play (as Braids or Blue Hawaii, it’s a magical experience. Thursday night was no different. High notes were belted angelically. Her band with Austin Tufts manic drumming and Taylor Smith’s funny faces were super solid. Deep in the Iris cuts live (particularly “Letting Go”, “Taste” and “Bunny Rose” were equally danceable as they were dreamy and singalongable. The highlight of the night was the highly anticipated “Miniskirt” which was saved for near the end. It was strangely mansplained by a dude who yelled “This is the best part.” Yes we know dude.
