To refresh your memory, Young Guv is the monicker of Ben Cook (of Fucked Up’s) glam rock sounding project. He’s been known to venture outside punk rock before, one of our favourites being electropop project Yacht Club. The funny thing about Ripe 4 Luv is that if we didn’t tell you so, you would have never figured out it’s him.

Beginning with “Crushing Sensation”, he takes you back in time to the 80s. You’d swear it was part of some sitcom or old-timey movie (sory guys I was born in the late 80s). The title track is full of attitude, like the sassy Prince (or whatever his name is now). Fucked Up guitar styles kind of make an appearance on “Crawling Back To You” until the singing starts.

“Aquarian” takes on an almost different persona as he whispers things into your ear. Then he is creepy in another sort of way in “Kelly, I’m Not A Creep”, like the nerdy kid who doesn’t know when to go away. My favourite from the album is moonwalking groove of “Wrong Crowd” with a killer sax solo. Some may argue that the song is too long (it’s 7 and a half minutes) but  the point is to get your body swinging to the easy beat and if you imagine it as being part of a show, it’s a killer way to end it. I certainly do not mind if Cook uses Young Guv as his experimental outlet for things outside punk, do you?
