This year was the first NXNE where I had to work a full-time job at the same time. I was also covering some of it for Exclaim! so my schedule for the most part was booked. The positive side is that it forced me to experience and discover some new things. I spent a lot of Wednesday at the Garrison where I caught Thus Owls, Circuits Des Yeux, Maica Mia and Thoughts on Air.
Beginning the night was Hamilton drone psych artist Thoughts on Air. This set screamed Weird Canada.
Maica Mia features GY!BE’s Mauro Pezzente in their latest album des era but he is not really a regular touring member and was not present Wednesday night. Despite that Maica Armata and drummer Jonny Paradise managed to be compelling, cutting their usually long tunes to a shorter length on stage.
I caught a little bit of Indiana’s Circuit Des Yeux, but they were totally a little bit too weird for me. They also totally pronounce their French name all wrong.
The Garrison’s saving grace for a rather slow night was the Swedish-Canadian folk duo Thus Owls. Frontwoman Erika Angell makes an alluring frontwoman and delivered stories of her Swedish roots in the form of beautiful vocals. If you haven’t checked it out yet Turning Rocks is an album you must hear.
