“Thanks for coming”, said Gabrielle Aplin, “I didn’t think anybody would turn up”. That drew a roaring applause from a packed El Mocambo gathered for her Canadian debut. The 21 year old, rocking a cute white sweater-cum-onesie, had to battle noise from a loud rock show upstairs. No worries there, as the crowd sang along from song one. The set, full of hits like ‘Panic Cord’, ‘Keep Pushing Me’ and ‘Home’, and popular covers ‘The Power of Love’ and Joni Mitchell’s ‘A Case of You’. There was a level of intimacy and connectedness as Aplin interacted with the crowd throughout her set, responding to frequent ‘I love yous’ and even getting help for a fainted drunk in the front. For the encore, she performed ‘A While’ unplugged amidst the fans, who were in awe of this perfection of a talent. Her only flaw: grossly underestimating her popularity.
