[Album Review] Brendan Canning- You Gots 2 Chill2013-10-073.0RatingReader Rating: (0 Votes)by Tiana Feng [author-post-rating] Release Date: October 1st, 2013 Label: Draper Street Records You Gots 2 Chill may sound like a joke title, but it is an apt name for the collection of 14 mellow tunes. This is Brendan Canning’s second album after 2008’s Something For All of Us… You Gots 2 Chill differs a lot from his past works, including his involvement in Broken Social Scene and electro-pop project Cookie Duster in that this is a purely acoustic record. The star of the show is Canning’s guitar finger-picking and occasional whispered vocals. “Bullied Days” features Daniela Gesundheit from Snowblink. Further investigation also found Future Husband’s Allison Dunnings; Sarah Haywood; Allie Hughes; Steve Singh and Justin Rutledge listed in the credits though I’m not sure who’s on what track. It all sort of blends together. Occasionally melodies remind me of Detroit’s Sufjan Steven, but atmospheric-wise does not get that weird. You Gots 2 Chill is warm, comforting, familiar. Canning doesn’t really rely on any popular folk gimmicks (like too much reverb or ukeleles etc), allowing it to be purposely sparse at times. “Last Song For the Summer Hideaway” allows the album to fade away into the sunset. Its October release marked the beginning of fall and Canning’s You Gots 2 Chill takes us to the new season by slowing down time as we watch the leaves fall and another year end.
