Alejandro Escovedo & The Sensitive Boys @ Toronto Underground Roots Festival 7/7/2013
I was a little late for TURF Sunday because I was teaching piano back in Mississauga. I missed The Wooden Sky and The Sadies but I made it in time for Alejandro Escovedo & The Sensitive Boys. Escovedo may be 62 years old but he can still rock his heart out.

Kurt Vile and the Violators @ Toronto Underground Roots Festival 7/7/2013
Kurt Vile and his band The Violators presented a mellow rock set decorated with sax solos. Vile himself didn’t really move much from one spot but his guitar solos made up for it.

Yo La Tengo @ Toronto Underground Roots Festival 7/7/2013
Experimental rock band Yo La Tengo played a set that included favourites like “Ohm” and “Stupid Things.”

Whitehorse @ Toronto Underground Roots Festival 7/7/2013
Husband and wife duo Whitehorse were up next. They created a full band sound by looping various percussion instruments live. Telephones were used for an interesting vocal effect.

Cat Empire @ Toronto Urban Roots Festival 7/7/2013
Australian troop The Cat Empire delighted the crowd with their latin and ska influenced rock. Singer Felix Reibl occasionally juggled roles on banjo and percussion. It started to rain but the crowd only danced harder.

Xavier Rudd @ Toronto Underground Roots Festival 7/7/2013
Xavier Rudd wielded 2 didgeridoos and a drum kit. His tunes were influenced by Australia’s Aboriginal people. Personally I thought all of his songs kind of sounded the same but the crowd seemed to be into it.

Neko Case @ Toronto Underground Roots Festival 7/7/2013
Concertgoers braved the downpour to Neko Case’s beautiful set. It was pretty amazing how dedicated the audience was to seeing the end of the weekend through. It was worth it to hear some classics “People Got A Lot of Nerve”, “I Wish I Was the Moon and new material including the single “Man” from their upcoming record.

Belle and Sebastian @ Toronto Underground Roots Festival 7/7/2013
My favourites of the entire festival were closer Belle and Sebastian. Stuart Murdoch took the reigns of frontman right away testing the sky for rain and inviting a girl on stage to dance and play Scrabble. The crowd joined in on a whistle solo during “The Loneliness of a Middle Distance Runner.” A sing-along ensued for encore “Get Me Away From Here, I’m Dying.” I walked away from TURF wanting to tweet hearts to everyone. <333333333333333 Belle and Sebastian @ Toronto Underground Roots Festival 7/7/2013Belle and Sebastian @ Toronto Underground Roots Festival 7/7/2013Belle and Sebastian @ Toronto Underground Roots Festival 7/7/2013Belle and Sebastian @ Toronto Underground Roots Festival 7/7/2013Belle and Sebastian @ Toronto Underground Roots Festival 7/7/2013Belle and Sebastian @ Toronto Underground Roots Festival 7/7/2013Belle and Sebastian @ Toronto Underground Roots Festival 7/7/2013Belle and Sebastian @ Toronto Underground Roots Festival 7/7/2013Belle and Sebastian @ Toronto Underground Roots Festival 7/7/2013Belle and Sebastian @ Toronto Underground Roots Festival 7/7/2013Belle and Sebastian @ Toronto Underground Roots Festival 7/7/2013Belle and Sebastian @ Toronto Underground Roots Festival 7/7/2013Belle and Sebastian @ Toronto Underground Roots Festival 7/7/2013Belle and Sebastian @ Toronto Underground Roots Festival 7/7/2013
