The weather was overcast on Friday but it didn’t deter TURF attendees from showing up. American singer-songwriter JD McPherson who brought some of the 50s and 60s back with his nostalgic rockabilly sound.

Fitz and the Tantrums took the crowd by storm with their soulful Scissor Sister-esque pop. Michael Fitzpatrick told promiscuous stories between tunes. The audience danced about and I have never seen so many people actually “drop it like it’s hot”.

Arkells @ Toronto Underground Roots Festival 7/5/2013
Headlining the night was Hamilton, Ontario’s Arkells. The began their set playing hits from Michigan Left and Jackson Square including “Kiss Cam” “Oh, the Boss is Coming” and “Whistleblower.” The last 40 minutes of their set was dedicated to Motown performing popular classics like “My Girl”, Jackson Five’s “I Want You Back”, “Sign Sealed Delivered” and more. Even the people who weren’t necessarily Arkells fans had a great time singing along and grooving to the covers.
