Led by José Contreras, By Divine Right have been making music for over a decade. In the past the band was like another Broken Social Scene drawing from Toronto’s pool of talent which included members of Holy Fuck, The Meligrove Band, Feist and BSS’ own Brendan Canning. Their latest effort Organized Accidents is an experiment from the core members which along with Contreras include The Mark Inside’s Geordie Dynes and Sheezer’s Alysha Haugen.

The 11 songs explore different sounds. There’s the psychedelic parts with retro guitar licks like in the opener “Past the Stars” and shoegazepop sounds of “More Thorns.” Organized Accidents has a rather timeless quality to its melodies as if it could be released anywhere in the last decade or the next. That may or may not be a weakness as the album does sort of fall into the “comfortable” and not overly ambitious territory. Comfortable, but certainly not boring. The eleven tunes pass by in a flash and have enough variation and memorable melodic and instrumental hooks to keep you listening.

All that being said, Organized Accidents makes me want to draw fictional cartoons of mutants eating ghosts and flying underground. Brb, I think I’m going to go do that.
