I’m not the best judge of female singer/songwriter types (I have a hard time telling them apart unless they’re completely unique) but I have to commend Carmen Townsend, and moreover, the production on “Start All Over.” There seems to be an unwritten rule where s/s acts either have absolutely bare bones production or, inversely, a completely over the top wall-of-sound I-guess-this-works-I-dunno-it-sounds-big-at-least approach is taken. Very rarely is middle ground achieved without it sounding like a normal, mediocre rock band. Carmen Townsend sounds simply like a s/s with a backing band in a small club, which is good, because while an orchestra playing behind her would be neat, it’d also be completely unbelievable.
