Finally! The release of Austra’s Feel It Break. The trio of Katie Stelmanis, Maya Postepski and Dorian Wolf have already created world wide attention with their single Lose It last week as it was one of Elbows hot videos all last week. I was quite excited to finally get a listen to the album in its entirety.
1. Darken Her Horse
2. Lose It
3. The Future
4. Beat and the Pulse
6. The Choke
7. Hate Crime
8. The Villain
9. Shoot The Water
10. The Noise
11. The Beast
The overall sound of Austra’s electronic music has a darkness to it. Katie definitely shows her past operatic training as her voice certainly carries and certainly has a punch but at the same time has control. It starts with the slower track Darken Her Horse. It wouldn’t be my pick as an album starter as I think it’s one of the weaker tracks, and also a long one at 5:21.
Lost It which follows would have been the perfect starter. It’s still one of my favourite tracks after hearing the album in whole, and I think there is a little bit of disappointment in that some of the songs in the rest of the album don’t live up to this track. Lose It has the infectious quality to be a superstar pop tune with its ear worm “ah’s” and simple chorus.
Some of the songs mid-album, aren’t so memorable and kind of mesh together as one song for me. It’s not really until the end track The Beast where the sound gets any “different”. The Beast strips out all the electronics with an acoustic piano with adds for a beautiful operatic performance for Katie.
There are some other tracks that lend a bit of differences and interest like Spellwork that do have varying qualities of electronic interest.
Maybe this is a grower, so I’ll give it a chance. It’s one of those albums where it has to be careful not to blend into the background because the tracks themselves have very little variation in approach and mood.
